National Park Peneda-Gerês National Park. By Gabriel González The Peneda-Gerês National Park , in the extreme northwest of Portugal, between the Alto Minho and Trás-os-Montes regions, is the only Portuguese protected area classified as a national park. Created in May 1971, the park has 70 thousand hectares of mountains and pure nature that make it one of the most incredible places in the neighboring country. It is a world apart in which human activity is harmoniously integrated into nature, preserving very ancient values and traditions, evident in community villages. The park extends from the Castro Laboreiro plateau to the Mourela plateau, including the Peneda, Soajo, Amarela and Gerês mountain ranges, crossing five municipalities – Melgaço , Ponte da Barca , Arcos de Valdevez , Terras de Bouro and Montalegre – and 22 towns. The Gerês, as it is normally known, borders Galicia, bordering the Baixa Limia and Serra do Xurés Natural Park .
The whole of this entire protected area forms the Gerês-Xurés Transfrontier Biosphere Reserve . The national park hides archaeological relics, impressive waterfalls, trails and unique flora and fauna. This is a place that is worth a visit at any time of the year, because with each visit there is a new corner to discover and a constantly changing landscape. 1.
